Abdominal Imaging Fellowship

Overview of Program

Abdominal imaging fellows have access to large public and private hospitals, ensuring diverse exposure to various studies and modalities, including colorectal, hepatobiliary, urology, and hepatology.

Fellows will gain proficiency in advanced abdominal imaging techniques, including CT, ultrasound, and MRI, to diagnose acute and chronic conditions. Daily work will also involve exposure to various interventional procedures using sonographic, fluoroscopic, and CT guidance.

Abdominal Imaging Program Director:
Dr Arjuna Somasundaram

Goals/Objectives

Our program trains radiologists in advanced abdominal imaging, focusing on CT, ultrasound, and MRI techniques for diagnosing a broad range of abdominal and pelvic conditions. Fellows will gain experience in interpreting complex imaging studies related to oncological, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and vascular diseases, as well as trauma and emergency care.

The program emphasises hands-on learning, providing opportunities to perform a variety of interventional procedures, from basic ascitic taps to complex abdominal drain insertions, and image-guided thermal tumour ablation, as well as other minimally invasive procedures under supervision using advanced imaging guidance.  Fellows will manage a high-volume caseload with a focus on both standard and specialised abdominal imaging procedures.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, fellows will participate in educational activities, research, and multidisciplinary meetings, enhancing their skills in both diagnostic and interventional abdominal imaging.

Upon completion, fellows will be proficient in interpreting abdominal imaging studies, confident in performing key interventional procedures, and prepared to contribute to subspecialty clinical teams in the abdominal and hepatobiliary fields.

Prerequisites

Applicants must have attained RANZCR Fellowship, or overseas equivalent and are required to meet all requirements of the Royal College of Australian and New Zealand  Radiologists (RANZCR www.ranzcr.edu.au) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulations Agency (AHPRA www.ahpra.gov.au).

This position will only be filled if a suitable candidate is identified.

Application

To apply, please provide an introductory letter and curriculum vitae to Dr Greg Amos, Queensland X-Ray Medical Fellowship Director, greg.amos@qldxray.com.au.

Abdominal imaging is a fascinating area of radiology, encompassing a broad range of body organ systems and pathologies whilst providing good clinician contact and lending itself well to procedural work. The fellowship allowed me to gain experience in a large number of hospital and community practices as well as the opportunity to work with highly respected sub speciality radiologists and mentors. Queensland X-Ray has allowed me to maximise my learning opportunities with the knowledge and skills obtained.
