Trainee Sonographer Program

Queensland X-Ray’s Trainee Sonographer Program offers students full-time paid employment, whilst undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound through QUT, or other Universities if you are based regionally. The traineeship runs for 2 years, and if you are successful in passing your University program you will graduate as a fully Qualified Sonographer. Regional candidates could also be eligible for reimbursement of university fees after 3 years of service has been completed post qualification.

    • Full-time paid employment while undertaking studies and completing required supervised clinical experience
    • Complete a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound via QUT, Monash, Charles Sturt or other regional universities
    • 2-year traineeship duration being trained by highly skilled experienced Sonographers
    • Graduate as a fully Qualified Sonographer upon successful completion of the University program
    • Regional candidates may be eligible for university fee reimbursement after 3 years of service post-qualification.
  • Applicants must:

    • have a recognised bachelor degree in a relevant allied health field (e.g. Medical Imaging, Nursing, Biomedical Science)
    • be enrolled in (or eligible to enrol in) a Graduate Diploma of Medical Ultrasound
    • be able to commit to living in the region for at least 5+ years

  • Applications for The Queensland X-Ray Trainee Sonographer program are now closed for the 2025 intake. Our next intake will open for applications in September 2025 for a limited time frame.

    To apply, applications must be submitted through our website current vacancies or live Seek adverts. The entry procedure includes successful completion of a 30-minute examination and interview.

    Documents to attach to your application:


    • A brief letter of introduction/cover letter (1 page maximum)
    • Your full resume (CV)
    • A copy of relevant transcripts (from your Bachelor's degree and/or any other related study)

  • You will need to:

    • pass all university and Queensland X-Ray assessment to maintain employment and position in the Trainee Sonographer program
    • maintain an enrolment in University course
    • Return 3 years of full-time service as a qualified Sonographer post-qualification in return for the 2-year paid Trainee Sonographer program.

  • Withdrawal by recipient: Trainee Sonographers who withdraw from the program may be required to repay some or all of the costs associated with the Traineeship.

    Termination of employment by Queensland X-Ray: Queensland X-Ray may terminate a Trainee Sonographer agreement if a recipient does not satisfactorily meet the University and Qld X-Ray assessment criteria.
