About
Dr Frans van Tonder is an Interventional Radiologist who joined Queensland X-ray in 2017. He earned his MBChB with First Class Honours in 2006 from the University of Cape Town and then trained in radiology at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne.
Awarded the MGF Donnan Prize for the most outstanding candidate in Australia in his FRANZCR final examinations, Dr van Tonder continued his training with fellowships in MRI and Interventional Radiology in Melbourne while completing a Master of Medicine in Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Melbourne. During this time, he combined clinical work with registrar teaching, research, and service as a VMO radiologist at St Vincent’s Public Hospital. He has published research both locally and internationally and maintains an ongoing interest in research and education.
In 2016, Dr van Tonder pursued additional training in Thoracic Imaging, completing an observership in interstitial lung disease at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London. Since joining Queensland X-Ray, he has worked primarily at the Greenslopes Private and Mater Campus Hospitals in Brisbane, holding the position of Director and Managing Radiologist at the Mater Public Hospital practice since 2019. His sub-specialist interests include general interventional radiology, interventional oncology, MRI and thoracic imaging.
In 2025, Dr van Tonder was appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Queensland X-Ray.
