Queensland X-Ray provides all clinical training through a unique employment-integrated training model. This approach replaces the traditional 50 weeks of unpaid placement with paid, hands-on clinical experience. Students are employed from day one as Trainee Nuclear Medicine Technologists, gaining practical skills and contributing as valued members of the Queensland X-Ray team.
Queensland X-Ray is proud to be one of the key partners in the program, providing hands-on training and support to students across our practices in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Mackay, Cairns, Toowoomba, and Townsville.
The program was introduced in 2025 and is the first time a nuclear medicine degree has been offered in Queensland, allowing students to study and complete their training locally without the need to move interstate.
The first cohort of students studying as part of RMIT University’s Bachelor of Medical Radiation (Nuclear Medicine – Industry Practice) are now halfway through their first year of study.
From their first week of study, students complete paid clinical placements, working alongside our experienced teams two days per week during the university semester. This gives them real-world experience from day one while helping to grow a skilled local workforce.
“This degree is a game-changer for Queensland. For the first time, students can train in nuclear medicine without leaving the state. We’re proud to help deliver this program offering real-world learning to develop a workforce of skilled nuclear medicine technologists across the state,” said John Barlow, Nuclear Medicine Operations Manager at Queensland X-Ray.

Madison is currently studying a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Nuclear Medicine) at RMIT University, completing her placement with Queensland X-Ray.
“I am really enjoying getting a hands-on experience. I wasn’t sure what to expect coming into this degree and placement. But it has been so fantastic to expand my knowledge in nuclear medicine. To be able to relate what I am learning in class to what I can see happening in real patient cases is so valuable,” said Madison, Nuclear Medicine Technologist Trainee at Queensland X-Ray.
This program helps tackle the growing shortage of nuclear medicine professionals across Australia. These specialists play a vital role in diagnosing and managing serious conditions like cancer, heart disease, and neurological disorders.
By training students in Queensland, Queensland X-Ray is helping to grow a local nuclear medicine workforce to improve access to services across the state.
