In 2021, the Seagulls launched a women’s rugby league program for the first time in the club’s 70- year history. The program provides an elite rugby league pathway for local girls with a direct link through to the NRLW.
That program would not be possible without the support of key partners like Queensland X-Ray, who have made a clear commitment to empowering women’s sport in the community. As a community oriented club, the Gulls believe it’s essential to provide a platform to showcase elite sport and promote role models for aspiring young athletes. Competing in elite rugby league competitions demonstrates to local girls and boys that there is a pathway for them to follow in an environment that is passionate about their development.
The 2021 season saw the Seagulls enter a competitive team in the U19 competition and kick start the women’s program. Beginning in 2022, the club will field a team in the BHP Premiership, which is the highest female rugby league competition in the state and features many of the game’s biggest names. Queensland X-Ray has committed to helping the Seagulls host a series of talent clinics and combines, which will help identify and develop the next generation of female rugby league stars.
The continuous support of a community club like the Seagulls is invaluable and greatly appreciated by all staff, players and fans.
