Women’s and Breast Imaging Fellowship

Overview of Program

Queensland X-Ray operates three dedicated women’s imaging practices in Brisbane and provides comprehensive women’s imaging across various community and hospital practices throughout the state. We have specialised, centralised reporting services.

This includes 3D and contrast-enhanced mammography, breast MRI, as well as gynaecological and obstetric imaging, covering areas such as endometriosis, gynaecologic malignancies, and pelvic floor. BMD is also performed.

Women's and Breast Program Director: Dr Kerry McMahon

Goals/Objectives

Our program trains radiologists in advanced breast and women’s imaging services. Fellows will benefit from 1:1 teaching with sub-specialist radiologists, engage in self-directed study through a formal curriculum, and participate in multidisciplinary meetings, women’s health meetings and attend conferences.

Fellows will manage a diverse caseload of women’s imaging, including routine and urgent studies, under consultant supervision. They will gain experience in screening and diagnostic mammography (incl. contrast-enhanced mammography), tomosynthesis, ultrasound, image-guided interventional procedures like breast biopsies and pre-surgical localisations, and MRI acquisition techniques.

The program offers opportunities to specialise in areas such as endometriosis, gynaecologic malignancies, and advanced breast imaging techniques. In addition to clinical duties, fellows will take part in educational activities and research projects to integrate advanced skills into their future practice. By the end of the program, fellows will be proficient in supervising and interpreting breast and women’s imaging studies, including advanced modalities, and will be confident in performing a range of interventional procedures.
