Integrated Cross-Sectional and Interventional Imaging Fellowship

Overview of Program

With access to large private and tertiary level public hospitals across South East Queensland, cross-sectional fellows will gain exposure to the latest CT, ultrasound, and MRI imaging techniques. Fellows will also learn indications and will become proficient in a wide variety of Tier A interventional procedures using sonographic, fluoroscopic and CT visualisation. Opportunities are available to attend a wide range of sub-specialty clinical team meetings to develop any subspecialty imaging interests.

Cross-Sectional Imaging Program Director: Dr Frans van Tonder

Goals/Objectives

Our program trains radiologists in advanced cross-sectional imaging, focusing on CT, ultrasound, and MRI techniques for diagnosing acute and chronic illnesses. Fellows engage in self-directed study and multidisciplinary clinical meetings to develop subspecialty interests.

Fellows will manage a high-volume caseload of complex imaging studies under consultant supervision, gaining experience in standard fare and specialised exams. The fellowship emphasises interventional skills, with broad access to a mix of private and public tertiary level interventional radiology cases, enabling fellows to perform biopsies, drainages, advanced musculoskeletal intervention, vascular access and other minimally invasive procedures using imaging guidance.

The program offers balanced exposure to both hospital and community settings, allowing fellows to become proficient in imaging for oncological, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and vascular diseases, as well as the role of imaging in trauma, infection, and emergency care.

In addition to clinical responsibilities, fellows will participate in educational activities, multidisciplinary meetings, and research projects, preparing them to integrate advanced imaging and interventional skills into general or specialist practice.

Upon completion, fellows will be skilled in interpreting cross-sectional imaging studies, confident in performing Tier A interventional procedures, and ready to contribute to subspecialty clinical teams.
