Queensland X-Ray recognises RUOK? Day

Today marks R U OK? Day, a nationwide initiative encouraging us to connect with those around us and have meaningful conversations about mental health.

Mental health is a vital aspect of overall wellbeing, helping us cope with life’s challenges and lead fulfilling personal and professional lives.

At Queensland X-Ray, we are committed to supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our people. As a Sonic Healthcare entity, we share a commitment to creating supportive and fulfilling workplaces. ‘Respect for our people’ is a key pillar of our long-standing Medical Leadership Principles and underpins everything we do.

Over recent months, we have been rolling out Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for staff. Just like physical first aid, MHFA equips people with the skills and confidence to recognise and respond to mental health concerns or crises. Participants learn how to approach someone they’re worried about, offer initial support, and encourage them to seek professional help, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.

Caitlin Whittington, In Charge Medical Administrator, shares her experience: “I recently completed the Mental Health First Aid course and highly recommend it. The content was practical and eye-opening. Our trainer, Emma, was fantastic, passionate and knowledgeable, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The mix of theory, discussions, and real-life scenarios kept it engaging. I now feel more confident supporting someone with mental health struggles, both at work and personally. This course is worth considering for everyone!”

In addition to offering targeted training, our staff also have access to Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). EAPs offer confidential counselling to support the mental health and emotional wellbeing of our staff. Accessible 24/7, they provide counselling, coaching, development programs, and resources across a diverse range of topics.

As we observe RUOK? Day, Queensland X-Ray staff are reminded to continue to stay connected, support each other, and prioritise mental health every day.

Asking, 'are you OK?' can make all the difference.
