Belmont State School + SolarBuddy Lights

SolarBuddy is an Australian charity uniting a global community with a big dream to gift six million solar lights to children living in energy poverty by 2030, to help them to read and study when the sun goes down and improve their education outcomes.

Belmont State School decided to get involved when they were learning about refugees through the novel ‘Boy Overboard’ and in a HASS (Humanities and Social Sciences) class.

The students started by fundraising, through a lap-a-thon and having buddy classes within the school who helped each Year 6 student to raise enough money.

Queensland X-Ray supported classes by providing enough money for every buddy class in the school to purchase and make their own solar light.

The school ended up making 250 lights, which are currently on their way to students in Papua New Guinea who will send thank you letters back to the Belmont students.
