National Lung Cancer Screening Program Now Available

Queensland X-Ray Proudly Delivering Australia’s First National Lung Cancer Screening Program

Eligible Australians can access free lung cancer screening at Queensland X-Ray through the first-ever National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP), launched today (1 July 2025) by the Australian Government.

Through the NLCSP, leading radiology provider Queensland X-Ray will provide low-dose CT scans at no cost to high-risk eligible individuals. By removing financial barriers and encouraging screening, the NLCSP aims to detect lung cancer earlier and help to improve survival rates for Australians most at risk.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Australia. Early detection can help to improve outcomes.

The National Lung Cancer Screening Program gives at-risk Australians access to critical, potentially life-saving screening. We’re proud to be delivering this vital screening service as part of a nationwide push to help detect lung cancer earlier and improve patient outcomes.

The program is available to Australians aged 50-70 who show no symptoms of lung cancer and have a history of smoking.  Participants will need a referral from their GP/healthcare practitioner, who will assess eligibility. More information on eligibility is available at http://www.health.gov.au

Lung cancer screening is a quick, non-invasive procedure that uses a low-dose CT imaging to detect lesions and signs of cancer before symptoms appear.

Imaging will be performed using market-leading technology and analysis systems to provide accurate and reliable imaging to support early detection and diagnosis. The report will be entered in the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) and sent to the referring practitioner for next steps.

As a participating provider, Queensland X-Ray is committed to delivering high-quality imaging services, ensuring that eligible Australians have access to the best possible diagnostic care.
