Vascular ultrasound is used to assess the condition of the veins and arteries in your body. This special ultrasound evaluates the blood flow to different parts of your body and is used to check for blood clots.
Your doctor may refer you for a vascular ultrasound if you are displaying symptoms of a DVT or are at risk of a stroke.
Vascular ultrasound utilises duplex ultrasound.
Each of our practices use a variety of equipment including Philips, Toshiba and GE machines.
Your ultrasound will be performed by a Sonographer who is a specially trained medical professional.
The images the Sonographer captures are viewed by a Radiologist who makes a diagnosis, and issues a report for your referring Doctor.
You will be asked to lie down on a bed or stand and the part of your body we’re imaging will need to be visible throughout the examination.
The Sonographer will move the probe around the area of interest using a warmed gel and may ask you to move into several positions during the scan. A small amount of pressure will be applied to the area. Your Sonographer will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable.
Each Ultrasound can take up to 2 hours.
The Sonographer and Radiologist will work together during an appointment to ensure all the necessary images are captured. This means that sometimes, the Radiologist will come into the room. You will be consulted before this happens.
The results of your ultrasound will be sent directly to your referring Doctor. Please ensure you book a timely follow-up appointment to discuss your results with them. In emergency cases our Radiologist, may talk to you directly and or contact your referring Doctor immediately.
The cost of an Ultrasound will depend on the reason for your scan. Please ask for a quote at the time of booking.
