Obstetric and Gynaecological ultrasounds are requested by your doctor for a number of reasons. Including, Pregnancy Imaging and for assessment of your ovaries, fallopian tubes and uterus and other fertility related issues.
How do I prepare?
- Wear a separate top to bottoms during your appointment. This makes changing for the examination easier.
- At the time of booking your appointment we will provide preparation instructions which should be followed.
Technology and Team
Each of our practices use a variety of equipment including Philips, Toshiba and GE machines.
Your Ultrasound will be performed by a Sonographer who is a specially trained medical professional. The images the Sonographer captures are viewed by a Radiologist who makes a diagnosis, and issues a report for your referring Doctor.
What happens during my examination
You will be asked to lie down on a bed and your abdomen will need to be visible. The Sonographer will do their best to protect your clothing as they apply a warmed gel to your abdomen, which enables movement of the ultrasound probe.
To ensure we capture all the images the Doctor needs, the Sonographer may take up to an hour to complete the scan.
In some cases, a transvaginal ultrasound is also performed.
The Sonographer and Radiologist will work together during the appointment to ensure all the necessary images are captured. This means that sometimes, the Radiologist will come into the room. If this is the case, you will be consulted before this happens.
After your examination
The results of your ultrasound will be sent directly to your referring Doctor. Please ensure you book a timely follow-up appointment to discuss your results with them.
The cost of an ultrasound will depend on the reason for your scan. Please ask for a quote at the time of booking.
