A Third Trimester Scan can happen at any point after 27 weeks. This scan is used to assess the continued development of your baby and to monitor your health as you get closer to the birth.
Many women do not require a scan following their Morphology scan. However, some Doctors refer for a scan in the later stages of pregnancy to monitor different elements of your pregnancy.
We can determine a lot about your baby in a third trimester scan, including its size and growth, the amount of amniotic fluid present, your baby’s wellbeing, the location of your placenta, and blood flow through the umbilical cord.
During the procedure we scan your pelvis with a full bladder (transabdominal scan).
Please arrive early for your exam as you will be asked to complete a pre-scan questionnaire.
It’s a good idea to dress in a separate top and bottoms, as this makes accessing your tummy easier.
We require you to have a full bladder during this scan. Please drink 500ml of water one hour before your appointment and try your best not to empty your bladder. If you find difficulty doing this, please talk to us at the time of booking.
You are not permitted to take photos or video during the scan. This is a medical procedure, and whilst we appreciate you are excited, the health of your baby is our primary concern and we ask for your support and understanding during this clinical appointment.
Due to the medical nature of the appointment we ask that you are accompanied by one person. If you want to bring another child, it’s important to be aware that sometimes an internal examination is also required and during this, the child will need to leave the room and be supervised.
Each of our practices use different equipment including Philips and Siemens machines
Your Ultrasound will be performed by a Sonographer. They are specially trained medical professionals who perform ultrasounds. The images the Sonographer captures are then reviewed by a Radiologist who will generate a report for your referring doctor.
You will be asked to lie down on a bed and your abdomen will need to be visible. The Sonographer will do their best to protect your clothing as they apply a warmed gel to your abdomen.
This gel helps the Sonographer move the probe over your abdomen and towards the pelvic/ovarian area.
To ensure we capture all the images the Doctor needs, the Sonographer may take up to an hour to complete the scan.
During a Third trimester Scan the Sonographer will observe the development of the baby and will check the function and position of the placenta. They will also look at the specific reason as to why you have been referred for the scan. In some cases, a transvaginal ultrasound is also performed. You can read about this part of the procedure here.
The Sonographer and Radiologist will work together during an appointment to ensure all the necessary images are captured. This means that sometimes the Radiologist will come into the room. If this is the case, you will be consulted before this happens.
The results of your Third Trimester scan will be sent directly to your referring Doctor. Please ensure you book a timely follow-up appointment to discuss your results with them. They will talk through the results with you.
The cost of your ultrasound will depend on various factors. Please ask for a quote at the time of booking.
