Cardiac

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and refers to a medical imaging scan that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images (or pictures) of internal organs making it ideal for imaging the heart.

Cardiac MRI is most commonly used for screening and diagnosis of the function of the heart.

What to expect when you visit us

We’ve created this patient experience video that provides an insight into what it’s like to have a Cardiac MRI scan at Queensland X-Ray.

How do I prepare for my Cardiac MRI scan?

Most Cardiac MRI scans do not require any special preparation. If you are having an Adenosine-stress CMR study, you will be advised at the time of booking what is required.

MRI safety

At Queensland X-Ray we take patient safety very seriously. MRI can be extremely safe provided all safety precautions are followed. MRI uses very strong magnetic fields and some people may be at risk in this environment.

When you book in for your MRI at Queensland X-Ray and when you arrive at your appointment, you will be asked a number of questions to make sure you don’t have any medical implants, devices or medical conditions that may put you at risk. Please let our staff know if you have any of the following:

  • Cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator
  • Cochlear or stapes implant
  • Neurostimulator
  • Aneurysm clips
  • Active implanted biomedical device
  • Infusion pump
  • Any other implants or devices in your head or body

Let us know if we can help

Some people may find the MRI scanner claustrophobic which can prevent them from completing the MRI scan. If you have experienced this previously or have any concerns, please let our bookings staff know and we will talk through the options available to you.

What happens during my examination?

The patient experience video provides an overview of what will happen during your cardiac MRI scan.

When you arrive, you will asked to complete an MRI Safety Questionnaire to make sure you are safe to enter the MRI scanner room. You will be asked to change into a gown before your MRI to ensure there is no metal on your body or in your clothing.

We will then place some ECG dots on your chest using a special abrasive gel to prepare your skin. In most cases we will need to give you a small injection of an MRI contrast dye into a vein in your arm so that we can get more detailed information about your heart tissue.

During the MRI scan you will need to lie flat on your back for about an hour. Each scan is planned specific to you while you are on the table so it is important you don’t move during the scan. We’ll make you as comfortable as possible using pillows and blankets. During this time you will be asked to hold your breath for short periods at a time (10-15 seconds) when requested by the radiographer.

When the images are being taken, you will hear loud banging noises. To protect your hearing, we’ll give you earbuds and headphones. Through the headphones you’ll be able to listen to music of your choice and also hear the radiographer talking to you.

You will be given a button to press should you at any time want to talk to the radiographer or stop the scan. The radiographer is watching you at all times and will be talking to you often throughout the scan.

After your examination

The results of your Cardiac MRI will be sent directly to your referring Doctor. Please ensure you book a timely follow-up appointment to discuss your results with them.

Cost

The cost of your Cardiac MRI will depend on the reason for your scan, and what information your specialist needs to manage your care. We will provide you with a quote at the time of booking.
