Echocardiography

An Echocardiogram or ‘Echo’ is an Ultrasound of your heart.

It uses sound waves to take images of the heart’s structure and function, including looking at any damage sustained from a heart attack, reasons behind chest pain and how your heart valves are working.

How do I prepare?

  • Wear a separate top to bottoms during your appointment. This makes changing for the examination easier.
  • Please don’t apply any body lotion or sunscreen to your chest before the appointment.
  • If you’re pregnant please let the Technician know.

Technology and Team

Your Echocardiogram will be performed by a specially trained Sonographer called an Echo Radiographer. The images the Echo Technician captures are viewed by a Radiologist who makes a diagnosis.

Training to be an Echo Radiographer requires an additional few years of study. At Queensland X-Ray we have a comprehensive Echo Technician training program, so you’re guaranteed to have a dedicated and specialised Echo Radiographer completing your scan.

What happens during my examination

You will be asked to change into a gown before your examination and the Radiographer will explain exactly what will happen during your procedure. It may vary slightly from what we describe below, so don’t worry.

You will be asked to lie on a bed and small ECG patches will be applied to your chest.

The Echo Tech will apply a warm gel to your chest which helps them move the transducer across your skin with ease.

Through the appointment the Echo Radiographer will ask you to move positions so they can capture your heart from all angles.

The scan can take up to 45 minutes.

After your examination

The results of your Echocardiogram will be sent directly to your referring Doctor. Please ensure you book a timely follow-up appointment to discuss your results with them.
