An Echocardiogram or ‘Echo’ is an Ultrasound of your heart.
It uses sound waves to take images of the heart’s structure and function, including looking at any damage sustained from a heart attack, reasons behind chest pain and how your heart valves are working.
Your Echocardiogram will be performed by a specially trained Sonographer called a Cardiac Sonographer. The images the Cardiac Sonographer captures are viewed by a Radiologist who makes a diagnosis.
Training to be a Cardiac Sonographer requires an additional few years of study. At Queensland X-Ray we have a comprehensive training program, so you’re guaranteed to have a dedicated and specialised Cardiac Sonographer completing your scan.
You will be asked to change into a gown before your examination and the Cardiac Sonographer will explain exactly what will happen during your procedure. It may vary slightly from what we describe below, so don’t worry.
You will be asked to lie on a bed and small ECG patches will be applied to your chest.
The Cardiac Sonographer will apply a warm gel to your chest which helps them move the transducer across your skin with ease.
Through the appointment the Cardiac Sonographer will ask you to move positions so they can capture your heart from all angles.
The scan can take up to 45 minutes.
The results of your Echocardiogram will be sent directly to your referring Doctor. Please ensure you book a timely follow-up appointment to discuss your results with them.
We Bulk Bill Echocardiograms for Pensioner and Health Care Card Holders*, other patients incur a GAP. For other patients there is a private fee for this scan.
