Breast Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to view the internal structure of your breast. The sound waves produce an image which allows the Radiologist to view the breast tissue from different angles and look for abnormalities.
Breast Ultrasound, like 3D Mammography, reveals masses and the cause of symptoms, separate from obscuring overlapping tissues. It provides important additional information, particularly in determining the cause of breast symptoms. Combined Mammography with subsequent Breast Ultrasound is proven to detect more breast cancers, than either alone. It uses no radiation and is the first test for young women.
Please arrive early for your exam as you will be asked to change into a gown. Wearing a two piece outfit can make this easier for you.
We also ask you refrain from using deodorant or lotions on the area, as this can interfere with the quality of the images.
On arrival, please present to reception. You will be asked to complete a short questionnaire about your medical history.
Each of our practices use different equipment including Philips and Siemens machines.
Your Breast Ultrasound will be performed by a Sonographer who is a specially trained medical professional. The images the Sonographer captures are then viewed by a Radiologist who makes a diagnosis.
We endeavour to have all Breast Ultrasounds performed by a female Sonographer. However, if you would like to ensure this happens, please book at one of our Women’s Imaging Centres or ask at the time of booking.
You will be asked to lay down on a bed and your breast will need to be visible throughout the examination. Some women find this awkward, but our Sonographers are discreet and professional and will do everything they can to make you feel comfortable.
The Sonographer will move the probe over the whole breast area and arm pit to capture a complete set of images.
The examination can take up to 30 minutes.
The Sonographer and Radiologist will work together during an appointment to ensure all the necessary images are captured. This means that sometimes, the Radiologist will come into the room. You will be consulted before this happens.
The results of your Breast Ultrasound will be sent directly to your referring Doctor. Please ensure you book a timely follow-up appointment to discuss your results with them.
The cost of a Breast Ultrasound will depend on the reason for your scan. Please ask for a quote at the time of booking.
