What is a DEXA Body Composition Scan?

A DEXA body composition scan, or dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to assess the distribution of lean muscle, fat, water and bone within the body.

How is a DEXA Body Composition Scan different to other body composition scans in the market?

According to the Royal Australian College for General Practitioners (RACGP), the DEXA scan is considered to be the ‘gold standard’. It has greater precision than other tests, shorter scan times, and a lower dose of radiation. A DEXA Body Composition Scan also measures total body fat percentage in a highly reproducible fashion.

How does the DEXA Body Composition Scan work?

The DEXA Body Composition Scan works by passing two very low dose x-ray beams at differing energy levels through the tissues of the body. By using two different x-ray sources, rather than just one, the accuracy in measuring the tissue density is significantly improved.

The amount of x-rays that come through the tissue from each of the two sources is measured by a detector. This information is sent to a computer which calculates a score of the average density of the tissue.

How long will the DEXA Body Composition Scan take?

The total DEXA Body Composition Scan will take approximately seven minutes. During this time, you’ll be lying flat on the scanning bed.

How much does the DEXA Body Composition Scan cost?

Costs will vary depending on your requirements, so best to chat with our team to receive an accurate quote.

How quickly will I get my results?

You will be provided with your results after your scan in both print and digital form. One of our friendly staff members will take you through your scan to outline the key measurements and explain what these mean.

What will the DEXA Body Composition Scan show me?

  • Total body bone mineral density
  • Total body muscle mass (g)
  • Total body fat mass (g)
  • Total body bone mass (g)
  • Total body fat percentage
  • Muscle and fat mass of the trunk and each of your arms and legs
  • Central abdominal fat measurement

How can I interpret my results?

The meaning of results will vary from person to person and decisions regarding your health should always be made in consultation with an experienced professional. With that in mind, below is a sample report and the meaning of the information found within it.
